As a grad photographer, I’m here to put your mind at ease. You DO NOT need to know how to pose! I will pose you. Relax, enjoy. I’ve got you.
“I don’t know how to pose.”
This is a pretty commonly expressed concern. There are very few people in the world who actually know how to pose themselves, and your teen is likely no exception to this. Thinking they have to know how to pose themselves at the session may cause them some level of stress which may also mean they are resistant to doing a photo session at all!
Let me put your mind and your teen’s mind at ease. No one, not even your teen, has to know how to pose themselves during a photo session! I will handle that, providing direction and demonstration to get them posing as if they were made for it.
We are going to create images that you’ll be proud to put on your wall.
Here are some of the poses I like to include in Teen Ladies Formal Sessions.
1) The Skirt Spin Pose:
The perfect way to show off a full skirt.
Here’s how I direct it:
“Stand facing the camera with a sturdy stance, relax the shoulders, grasp some of the skirt of the dress with both hands. Keep your eyes on the camera and smile as you turn around fast enough to make the skirt spread out around you.”
Or here’s a variation for ladies who can’t safely spin for any reason (it’s usually the shoes lol).
“Stand facing the camera with a sturdy stance, relax the shoulders, grasp some of the skirt of the dress in each hand. Turn just your torso in a semicircle left to right smoothly fast enough that swishes the skirt around your legs. Either smile down at your skirt or smile at the camera while doing so.”

2) A Ladies Power Pose:
A feminine and powerful pose that helps show off physique and personality. Great for any dress type.
Here’s how I direct it:
“Stand at a 45 degree angle to the camera. Shift your weight on to one foot. Bend the knee of the other leg. Stand up straight, shoulders back and relaxed. Place one hand on your waist, let the other hang at your side or rest on your thigh. Turn your head toward the camera and smile.”

3) Soft Side Seated Pose:
An easy, beautiful pose that makes your teen lady look soft and feminine.
Here’s how I direct it:
“Sit on a clean patch of ground on one hip, legs out to one side, knees bent. Rest your weight on one hand on the ground. Rest the other on your thigh. Spine tall, shoulders back and relaxed. Look at the camera and smile or look down at the hand you have on the ground.”
4) *NEW* Interacting With Surroundings:
Using your surroundings to help support a pose helps to create dynamic shapes in an image, just like this one.
Here’s how I direct it:
“Lean against the railing, rest the arm closest to me on the railing, and lean into it. Step your feet forward a step, extend the back leg, and point the toe. Turn to look at me. Raise your back hand and swish your hair. Smile.”

I often demonstrate poses that I want my clients to do. So even if these instructions don’t translate well, my visual demonstration will.
There you have it. Three – No, FOUR! – beautiful and easy poses for your teen ladies formal session!
I’ve got more where those came from.
Honestly, though, they do translate better in person under my direction.
