Twins Graduating in the Time of COVID – Aimee

by Aug 7, 2020

Graduation photos are, to some, considered a staple of the graduation experience. With Covid running rampant canceling graduations left right and center photos seemed to become much more important to help provide a proper sense of closure and celebration. Not only for the grads but also for the parents. And I’m proud and honored to be able to provide this service to the beautiful graduate that I’m featuring in this blog (and her sister and Mom in other blogs to come).

We spent a couple of days together. The Casual portrait session took us around Saskatoon to basketball courts, Riversdale, and to Kinsmen Park. The formal session found us at Boffins Garden on a day threatening rain.

Let’s dive in and chat with Aimee about her graduation experience during Covid.

R & S: Hi Aimee! Let’s start with where you went to high school.

Aimee: I attended Warman High School.

R & S: What is your favorite memory from high school? What will you miss the most?

Aimee: My favorite memory of high school was probably during the week before the Christmas break, the school hosts a week-long event called Olympics where each grade chooses a country competes in different events to win. The grade 12’s were Barbados and we all wore the colors of the flag. It was the last day and my grade 12 class was tied with the grade 11’s. There was one event left and that was the rely race. Everyone was cheering and clapping, it was so exhilarating. My grade did end up winning and we all started line dancing to celebrate. Coincidently that is also the thing I will also miss. Being with all my friends and classmates and just being together.

R & S: How did you feel when you learned your grad festivities were being canceled because of Covid?

Aimee: When school was canceled in March I still had a little hope that we might get to go back in June and I would get my graduation. When I got my formal letter in May saying that graduation was canceled that’s when it really hit me that I’m not going to get my skip day, my prank day, or my graduation. I broke down crying for about half an hour while my mom tried to console me. It broke my heart that the school didn’t try to do anything to help.

R & S: Did you still celebrate your graduation in spite of Covid?

Aimee: When I got my letter in May that’s when my mom and other parents of Warman High started planning a safe social distancing grad for us to attend. My family also still came over and planned a mini-parade just for Raina and I that made me feel special.

R & S: What sorts of celebrations and events were planned?

Aimee: My mom and many other parents planned a safe social distancing grad at the Wyant Raceway on June 26th and had a parade in Warman on the main streets on June 25th to celebrate with the town since not a lot of people could come to the race track because of Covid.

R & S: Part of your grad celebrations was to have casual and formal portraits done with me (your Mom asked me to do them before you even started 12th grade lol). Tell me, were the portraits mostly for your Mom or were you both excited to be having portraits done?

Aimee: The casual portraits were more for our mom than us, but I did have fun shooting them because I felt like a model for the day.

R & S: Tell me a little more about your Casual portrait experience. What was your favorite part? What did you think of the images?

Aimee: The casual portraits were fun to do outside like I said before I kind of felt like a model although it was pretty hard to pose in front of a beaming hot sun all day. I have never really like myself in photos before, but I was very impressed with how awesome they turned out.

R & S: Tell me a little more about your Formal portrait experience. What was your favorite part? What did you think of the images?

Aimee: Of course the formal portraits were fun. I got to walking around all dressed up with my hair and makeup done and my grad dress on as people stared at me. I absolutely loved the formal pictures! They all made me look like Cinderella and I felt that way all day during the photos.

R & S: Do you think your graduation was made better or worse because of Covid?

Aimee: To be honest I think my graduation turned out a little better because of Covid. A whole community got together and planned a special event for us. I honestly think that a parade should be a part of every graduation because I loved seeing the community of Warman coming out and sharing our special moment. The racetrack was also better than normal graduation because I didn’t have to sit in a humid gym for 3 hours watching the same person over and over again accepting all of the awards. It was a fun experience that I’ll definitely never forget.

R & S: What are your plans for after graduation, for summer? Post-secondary? Gap year? Work?

Aimee: In the fall I will be attending the U of S to hopefully become a history/biology teacher, but for now you will find me working part-time at Clip’n Climb in Saskatoon.
